The aim of this short introduction is to introduce Qur’anic Arabic to non-Arabic speakers who are interested in reading the Qur’a:n. The scope of the booklet is confined to introducing sounds and letters of Qur’anic Arabic and the common grammatical types of word, such as noun, verb, preposition, etc., readers of the Holy Scripture may come across during their reading. The examples used in the booklet are mainly derived from Juz’ ‘Amma (Part 30), the final part of the Qur’a:n. Most of the Suras (chapters) in this part are characteristically short and henceforth easy to memorise. Also, they are frequently used by many Muslims in their daily prayers.
The booklet is organised in 4 chapters. In Chapter 1 we introduce sounds of Qur’anic Arabic and how they are pronounced. In Chapter 2 we deal with letters of Qur’anic Arabic and how they are joined and talk about other written symbols employed in the alphabet. Chapter 3 tackles words in Qur’anic Arabic and introduces some grammatical classes of words illustrating them with examples from the Qur’a:n; this includes pronouns, nouns, adjectives, verbs and prepositions. In Chapter 4 we deal with definite and indefinite words as well as masculine and feminine words.
The system of transliteration adopted in symbolising Qur’anic examples is based on the English alphabet for convenience.
